Rory McIlory's stunning course record 62 allowed him to cruise to victory at the Quail Hollow championship just two days before he turned 21.
Finishing four strokes back in second was world number two Phil Mickelson who was quick to heap the praise on the talented youngster.
“Rory played some incredible golf and 30 on the back nine at this course is just fabulous,” said the Californian.
“I've played with Rory a few times and he's a great young man. I really enjoy being around him. So I'm delighted he won, even if it was at my own expense
McIlroy finished the last six holes in an otherworldly 18 strokes that had commentators David Feherty and Jim Nantz in awe,the usually loquacious Feherty was almost)lost for words.
McIlroy has had little time to celebrate his victory or his birthday as he is playing in the Players Championship at Sawgrass in Florida this week.
If he avoids the celebrations whoed bet against him this week.
