Super 15 kick off

With some of the relatively dreary fair that has been on show thus far in the Six Nations, particularly whenever England are involved, the on screen spectacle has been somewhat of a disapointment for rugby fans since the pool stages of the Heineken Cup ended. This weekend comes some much needed relief in the form of the Super 15 with the cream of Southern Hemisphere rugby poised for another breathtaking season of flowing rugby and big hitting. Last years champions The Reds and fellow finalists The Crusaders look poised to challenge for top honours once again although the Crusaders without the departed Sonny Bill Williams, and the injured Dan Carter and Richie McCaw will find it tough going against an exciting looking Blues side this week. Other possible contenders include the Waratahs with the South African threat mainly coming from the Bulls this season If your a rugby fan this is what you've been waiting for and the wait ends now.

Damp Squib for Westwood as Clark prevails

Tin Clark came from behind to win the Players Championship in dramatic fashion with a final round 67 to finish on 16 under.

Clark's round included five straight birdies around the turn to hold off Robert Allenby by one shot.

U.S open champion Lucas Glover overcame a disasterous start to finish third on 14 under and prove that he himself worth the each way bet I placed on him on Friday night.

However it was a tough day for overnight leader Lee Westwood struggled and trailed by two with two holes remaining before finding the water on the notorious 17th to end his challenge.

Westwood failed to follow good friend Rory Mc Ilroy's advice on finishing tournaments. Instead it was Clark who produced a weekend charge to take the victory.

Pieterson on his bike for baby birth

Kevin Pieterson is one of lifes anomaly's. Namely a cricketer interesting enough to make the headlines.

He has everything the brits love in their sporting hero's: occasionaly stupid haircuts and a pop star wife coupled with an ability to create controversy wherever they go without meaning to.

In the last few days he's been making the headlines at the World 20/20 for all the right reasons as he smashed consecutive man of the match performances against Pakistan and his native South Africa. (Thats right he's not English but than who on the English cricket team actually is ?)

But now K.P is jetting off to be with wife Jessica Taylor ( the good looking one from the rubbish band Liberty x) for the birth of their first child mid tournament and suprise suprise he's getting criticised.

Personally I am wholly supportive of Pieterson who plans to fly back for the semi finals should England make it (almost certain). The question is will his mind be focused?

Here's Pieterson after the South Africa game talking about his decision

Chelsea Champions

Chelsea wrestled the Premiership title from Manchester United on the final day of the season with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Wigan.

What seemed like it could be an entralling finale with just 1 point seperating both sides had all the drama of Dan Brown's latest novel (sorry Dan) as Chelsea raced into the lead through Nicolas Anelka after just 6 minutes.

When Gary Caldwell was sent off after bringing down Frank Lampard after half an hour Lampard converted the penalty to put Chelsea home and dry.

None of which seemed to be a cause for celebration for Didier Drogba who showed his by now famous maturity (you know the kind that places him in Time magazines top 15 most influential people in the world) by throwing a strop because he wasn't allowed take the penalty.

In the second half he was allowed to take one(possibly after his mom had intervened)and he scored, adding two more to claim the golden boot ahead of Wayne Rooney who failed to score in United's 4-0 victory.

Rain ends Irish parade

The rain followed the Irish cricket team to the Caribbean and in the end it was the rain that ended their participation in the Twenty20 world cup.

After a turgid batting display had cost Ireland against the West Indies on Friday night they faced England in a winner takes all encounter on Tuesday night.

Led by the evergreen Trent Johnston, ably supported by Kevin O Brien and young spinner George Dockrell who at this time next year will be to busy sitting the leaving cert to play in this event, the irish stifled Englands batsmen restricting them to just 121-8 from their 20 overs.

If England's Eoin Morgan hadn't smashed a quick fire 45 from 37 balls England's score wouldn't even have approached respectability. If only Ireland could produce batsman of his calibre,(Unfortunately the last one we had was Eoin Morgan a couple of years ago).

Ireland got off to a bad start when Paul Stirling was caught for a duck in the first over. Then with Ireland on 14/1 and the game finely balanced, the heavens opened shutting the door on Irelands hopes of a memorable victory.

In the Sky commentary box Nick Knight was full of praise for the Irish efforts especially Dockrell who he said might " Be playing for a different team in a few years". Michael Atherton looked embarrased exclaiming "Are we just going to keep nicking their players ?".

Based on this performance they might be best served to keep doing it.

McIlroy comes of Age

Rory McIlory's stunning course record 62 allowed him to cruise to victory at the Quail Hollow championship just two days before he turned 21.

Finishing four strokes back in second was world number two Phil Mickelson who was quick to heap the praise on the talented youngster.

“Rory played some incredible golf and 30 on the back nine at this course is just fabulous,” said the Californian.

“I've played with Rory a few times and he's a great young man. I really enjoy being around him. So I'm delighted he won, even if it was at my own expense

McIlroy finished the last six holes in an otherworldly 18 strokes that had commentators David Feherty and Jim Nantz in awe,the usually loquacious Feherty was almost)lost for words.

McIlroy has had little time to celebrate his victory or his birthday as he is playing in the Players Championship at Sawgrass in Florida this week.

If he avoids the celebrations whoed bet against him this week.
